We're leveling the playing field! Mercy announces plan for new athletic complex.

Dear Mercy alumnae, parents and friends,

I am pleased to share with you important news that will continue to position Mercy for an exciting future. Last Thursday, November 30th, the Mercy High School Board of Trustees affirmed unanimously that an artificial turf field on our campus is the next major capital priority for Mercy. With this approval, we will move forward with the planning and fundraising for a new state-of-the-art home for the Mercy Magic: an artificial turf field!

This is the right time for a transformational—and ambitious—project for two reasons. First, our campus facilities supporting our academic and fine arts programs are strong, particularly following this summer’s installation of a new heating and cooling system and flexible, modern furniture for 16 classrooms in our main academic building. Second, our Magic athletics program is vibrant and competitive. In the spring, our lacrosse team beat Friends School of Baltimore to bring home the IAAM B Conference championship. This fall, our soccer team upset nationally ranked Archbishop Spalding High School in the semifinals, only to fall in the last 40 seconds in a tremendous championship game against McDonogh School. Our Magic Nation—students, families, and alumnae—packed the stands in a show of school spirit that touched the hearts of all who witnessed it.

This decision comes at a critical moment in Mercy’s history. Almost three years ago, we identified $10 million in capital and programmatic priorities through our strategic planning process, Mercy Moving Forward. With more than $4 million of those priorities completed, an artificial turf field is the next significant project that will help ensure Mercy’s continued leadership among independent girls’ schools in Baltimore and beyond.

I am deeply grateful to Trustee Dan Shanahan P ’07, P ’13 for leading a committee of dedicated volunteers to study the feasibility of a turf field, and to the Mercy alumnae, parents and friends who have already indicated support of this effort. As our plans unfold, we will be in touch with you. However, if you would like to learn more now about how to support this effort in these early stages, please be in touch with me at mlennon@mercyhighschool.com.

In this beautiful season of Advent, we reflect on all the blessings that Mercy has received, and we look forward to this next transformational step with great hope and joy. Now, let us move swiftly, work mightily, and level the playing field for our Mercy Magic!

In Mercy,
