World Languages
Mercy offers comprehensive language study in Spanish and French, levels I-V. Students are required to take two years of the same language. Those entering Mercy with a strong Spanish or French background are encouraged to take a placement test which will determine their language level.
The World Languages Department takes pride in a faculty with a variety of international backgrounds and years of study and teaching in Europe and Latin America.
Linguistic proficiency and cultural sensitivity are the basic components of the world languages program. Students receive rigorous training in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. The outside world enters the classroom through French and Spanish news and cultural programs, which are accessed through the Internet and French TV5 channel. Opportunities to travel to countries speaking these languages are available. Recent trips include holiday and summer travel to France and French-speaking Canada.
